
Stampede prepare for battle in Iowa

STAMPEDE UPDATE: Recapping the week of January 19th-25th:
Tuesday, January 20th at Cedar Rapids: The RoughRiders defeated the Stampede 5-0 in Cedar Rapids. The RoughRiders scored twice in the first and second periods en route to their victory. Kasey Moreland played in net for the first period making eight saves, while Craig Vardy played the second and third periods for Sioux Falls, stopping 19 of 22 shots.
Friday, January 23rd at Tri-City: After two scoreless periods, the Stampede tallied the first goal of the game early in the third period when captain Jim McKenzie notched his 17th goal of the season at 11:35 to give the Herd a 1-0 lead. Tri-City responded a 1:30 later on a goal by Mark Van Guilder that tied the game and sent it into overtime. In the extra session, Bill Thomas scored nine seconds in to give Tri-City a 2-1 win. Craig Vardy stopped 36 of 37 shots in the loss for the Stampede.
Saturday. January 24th at Lincoln: The Stampede jumped on the board in the first period when Andrew Carroll notched his 10th goal of the season on the power play. Lincoln would tie the game in the second only to see Matt Ford respond just minutes later on the power play. The goal was Ford's 18th of the season. Lincoln would tie the game late in the second period and take the lead for good four minutes into the third period. Kasey Moreland made 37 saves in the loss. The loss against Lincoln was the first this season for the Herd. They currently lead the season series 3-1-0.
Sunday. January 25th vs Sioux City: The Sioux City Musketeers defeated the Stampede 5-2 in Sioux Falls. Sioux City led 4-2 after two periods and hung on for the victory. Jim McKenzie and Jeff Prough both tallied goals and assists for the Stampede. Craig Vardy made 29 saves in the loss for Sioux Falls.
UP NEXT: The Stampede return to action on the road this weekend with games in Waterloo and Des Moines. Game time Friday night in Waterloo is 7:05PM and 7:35PM on Saturday at Des Moines. Friday's game will mark the first time the Stampede have played in Waterloo this season. The Stampede currently lead the season series with the Des Moines Buccaneers (3-1-0) and have won the last three games played against the Bucs'.
BLACK HAWKS UPDATE: The Black Hawks are 1-1 versus the Stampede this season. Waterloo is currently 16-17-3 and hold down third place in the East Division. The Hawks earned a split over the weekend, defeating Danville 2-1 on Friday before falling 2-1 to Green Bay on Saturday. Joel Hanson leads the Hawks in scoring with 34 points (8-26) while Kevin Regan has seen the majority of the time in goal, recording a 14-12-1 record and a 2.71 GAA and a .907 saves percentage.
BUCCANEERS UPDATE: The Bucs' are currently on a three-game losing streak, but just nine points back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the West with a 15-19-4 record. Mike Erickson and Marty Mjelleli are tied for first on the team in total points with 36 points. Erickson leads the teams in goals with 21 goals and Mjelleli leads the team in assists with 20. Pat Watson and Dwight LaBrosse have split time between the pipes, with Watson collecting four victories in eight games with a 2.97 GAA.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Captain Jim McKenzie and alternate captain, Matt Ford have climbed up the USHL scoring leader board. McKenzie is currently third in the league in total points with 42 (18-24), just one point back of leaders Bryan Marshall of Danville and Paul Stastny of River City. Ford is currently tied for sixth with 39 points (18-21).
SPECIAL TOUCH: After a difficult start to the season, the Stampede power play has been very productive as of late. The Stampede scored twice on three chances last night versus Sioux City and have improved to 14.77 percent on the year.
