Harrisburg Stampede News Release
HARRISBURG, PA (Jun 4, 2014) - The Harrisburg Stampede professional football team announced its plans to assist Susquehanna Township High School in its efforts to save an important piece of the school's history.
Since the year 1971, every graduating class has contributed to the murals that line the hallways in the school. Events from the Kent State shootings of the 1970s to the hip-hop revolution of the 1990s and the war on terrorism in the 2000s have been chronicled on walls throughout the school as seen through the as eyes of its students.
A recent school board decision to renovate the HVAC system in the school has put the artwork at risk.
Now, alumni are rallying in the names of Zachary Holtzman, a 1999 graduate killed by a train later that year, and countless other student artists to save the murals from being partially covered this summer - and possibly damaged - when the ceiling is dropped to accommodate new ductwork for HVAC upgrades.
"These murals have been a rich part of the school's history for over 40 years," said Marques Colston, President/General Manager of the Harrisburg Stampede, and 2001 STHS graduate. "As an alumnus of STHS, it is awesome to see the alumni community step up to the plate and contribute to the preservation of such a meaningful piece of history there."
In support of the "Save the Murals!" campaign, the Stampede organization is offering a fundraising opportunity. For the remaining three home games, the Stampede will offer a $10 endzone ticket and $5 of every ticket will be donated to the STHS Alumni Association and Hanna Education Foundation. Also, for every dollar raised in this program, Marques Colston has pledged to match personally.
