Stampede Defense Fuels Idaho's 98-92 Win at NBA D-League Showcase

SANTA CRUZ, CA. - The Idaho Stampede (7-15) defeated the Fort Wayne Mad Ants (11-9) on Saturday, 98-92, at the NBA Development League Showcase in Santa Cruz, CA.

Idaho held Fort Wayne to just 40 percent shooting (34-of-86), including 29 percent (9-of-31) from three-point range and made 20 of their 21 free throws to hang on for the victory.

Seven different players punched their way in the scoring column for each team in the first quarter, with the Stampede's JJ O'Brien (nine points) and the Mad Ants' CJ Fair (seven points) leading the way for their teams as the Stampede led 25-22 heading into the second quarter.

The Stampede bench stepped up offensively in the second frame, scoring 16 of the team's 21 behind E.J. Singler's eight points and six rebounds. Fair finished with 11 first-half points on five-of-eight shooting (62.5 percent) and O'Brien's 11 first-half points on four-of-six (66.7 percent) shooting were a team high in the first half.

The Stampede held the Mad Ants to 28.6 percent (6-of-21) shooting in the third quarter and enjoyed their biggest lead of the game at 13, 69-56, with 53.9 seconds remaining, eventually closing the third quarter leading 69-58 behind 50 percent (10-of-20) shooting.

The Mad Ants closed the deficit to three at 95-92 in the fourth quarter with Fair's three-pointer with 25.4 seconds remaining, but two free throws from O'Brien secured the Stampede's 98-92 victory.

O'Brien (8-of-15) and Bryce Dejean-Jones (7-of-14) scored 22 points apiece for the Stampede.

Fair also added 22 points (8-of-14) for the Mad Ants and Rakeem Christmas contributed a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Idaho will return home to play Rio Grande Valley (11-8) on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 9 p.m. ET and Fort Wayne hits the road for a four-game road trip starting at Erie (6-11) on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. ET.
