Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Stampede allowed three goals in the second period were unable to recover as they fell 7-3 to the Omaha Lancers Wednesday night at the Sioux Falls Arena. The loss dropped the Herd to 15-31-6 on the season and kept them winless against the Lancers this season as they finish the year 0-5-3 against the first place Lancers. Omaha improved to 34-17-3 and pushed their lead to three points over second place Lincoln. Matt Van Voorhis, Austyn Young and Ed McGovern scored for the Herd while Jay Williams stopped 21 shots in goal.

Omaha jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Kenny Morrison and Greg Gozzo. Sioux Falls got on the board with just 59 seconds remaining in the period when Matt Van Voorhis tallied his eighth goal of the season. Dan Carlson fed Van Voorhis in front of the net who slipped the puck past through the legs of Omaha netminder Alex Lyon. Sioux Falls outshot the Lancers 13-12 in the period.

Omaha pulled away in the second period, scoring three times on Williams. Anthony Hamburg gave the Lancers a 3-1 lead when he picked up a rebound to the right of Williams and lifted it just under the crossbar. Max Vallis made it 4-1 a few minutes later when he blasted a shot in the high slot for a powerplay goal. The Lancers then got a little luck later in the period when a clearing attempt behind the net hit Mark Miller in the arm and floated back in front of the net, hitting Williams in the back and sliding into the net to make it 5-1 after two periods. Omaha outshot the Herd 12-6 in the period.

Sioux Falls would not go down without a fight though, scoring at 11:40 of the period when Young recorded his 10th of the season. Evan Moore shot sailed off the back glass and went to Sam Rothstein who slid the puck just outside the right circle to Young who then one-timed the puck into the net to make it a 5-2 game. Four minutes later Sioux Falls made a game out of it when Ed McGovern scored a powerplay goal off a blast from the high slot that beat Lyon on the glove side. That would be as close as the Herd would get though as the Lancers added two empty net goals late to seal the victory at 7-3.

Sioux Falls outshot the Lancers 20-4 in the third and 39-28 on the night while going 1 for 10 on the powerplay. The Lancers finished the night 2 for 6.

The Stampede will look to get back on track this Friday when they travel to Waterloo to face the Black Hawks at 7:05 PM before returning home to the Sioux Falls Arena on Sunday to host Cedar Rapids at 5:05 PM.
