Urbandale, IA - Playing less than 24 hours from their game the night before, the Sioux Falls Stampede were overmatched by a well-rested Des Moines Buccaneers team Sunday afternoon. The Bucs scored twice in the first, twice in the second and three times in third in a 7-0 rout of the Stampede at Buccaneer Arena. The Bucs had more legs having not played on Saturday and capitalized on their opportunities. Roman Durny became the first goaltender this season to blank the Stampede, stopping all 23 shots in the game.

The Stampede came out with energy, but the Bucs capitalized on the first major turnover of the game at 5:53 of the period. The Herd lost control of the puck in between the circles and Sam Renlund pounced on it and broke in all alone, scoring on a backhand shot to make it a 1-0 game. The Stampede had a couple of good scoring chances, but the score remained 1-0 until 17:20 when Matt Brown tallied his league leading 13th goal of the season to make it a 2-0 game. Jack Clement wristed a shot that hit the back board, but bounced back in front of the net to Renlund who quickly knocked it home. Both teams finished the period with nine shots on goal.

The Herd started the second period with a minute left on a power play, but were not able to convert. Just seconds after the penalty expired the Bucs extended their lead when Rylee St. Onge took the puck coast to coast and blasted a shot from the top of the left circle under the left glove of Stampede goaltender Chad Veltri for a 3-0 game. Six minutes later the Bucs would go on a 5-on-3 advantage and they would make the most of the opportunity. Mike Kesslring wrsited a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net for a 4-0 lead and that sent Veltri to the bench and Jaxson Stauber into the game. The Bucs outshot the Herd 9-4 in the period.

The Buccaneers added to their lead in the third with a power play goal from Reed Lebster at 5:39 of the period. Less than a minute later it was a 6-0 game when TJ Walsh connected with Mac Welsher who tapped the puck past Stauber. The Stampede went on another power play midway through the period, but the Bucs would be the ones to convert when Tyler Paquette stole the puck and broke free into the Stampede zone where he wristed a shot into the back of the net for the knockout punch at 7-0.

Des Moines outshot the Herd 12-10 in the period and 30-23 on the afternoon. The Bucs finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play while the Stamped went 0-for-6.

The Herd return to action this weekend as they travel to Lincoln and Tri-City on Friday and Saturday. Puck drops are 7:05 PM each night and fans can catch both games on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 105.1-FM, 107.9-FM and KELO.com. The games will also be available on HockeyTV.com.
