Roanoke Steam News Release
Roanoke - The Augusta Stallions overcame six turnovers and a 20-point second-half deficit to post a 54-44 victory over their hosts, the Roanoke Steam.
In a game that alternated between brilliant offensive execution and ugly, turnover-marred miscue, the Steam leapt out to an early 27-7 lead thanks mainly to an uncharacteristally bad first half by Stallions QB Glen Gauntt. Gaunnt, who threw three interceptions and fumbled twice, was unable to spark the Stallions' offensive attack against a fired-up Steam defense.
But Gauntt and the Stallions never lost their cool, regrouping in the final minute of the first half to score a touchdown, on a pass to Stuart Brown. That score started a chain of events which saw Augusta outscore the Steam 40 to 17 for the remainder of the game.
Both teams lost key members of their offensive attack to injury. Stallions OS Undre Williams went down with a hamstring pull in the first quarter. Steam OS Tacoma Fontaine suffered the same malady late in the game. Williams exited prior to seeing much offensive action. Fontaine finished with 4 catches for 101 yards and 4 total touchdowns.
Roanoke led as late as the 4:18 mark of the 4th quarter, but ineffectivness on offense and an opportunistic Stallions assault put Augusta up for good. The end of the game was marred by an ugly, bench-clearing brawl that saw eight players ejected from the contest.
Gaunnt finished the game 22 of 35 with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Three of those touchdowns went to WR Stuart Brown, who pulled in 6 catches for 92 yards, and netted Offensive MVP honors for the game.
Stallions DS Adrian Jones, named ADT Defensive Player of the Game, intercepted 3 passes. Steam WR/DB Karlos Odum, who was second on the Steam with 35 receiving yards on 3 catches, was named Ironman of the Game.
The loss dropped the Steam to 6-7 on the year. Augusta moved to 11-1. Roanoke will be in action next Saturday at home versus the Rochester Brigade.
