St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
Shreveport, LA-St. Joe (16-18) controlled the middle game in Shreveport (17-17) with a 6-1 decision behind all facets-pitching, hitting and defense. The Blacksnakes have now won 11 of the 13 games following their 10-game losing streak and are within two games of .500 for the first time since May 24th.
This time the Sports struck first, with a run in the first on Todd Self's sacrifice fly. It was just the second time St. Joe did not score first since June 3-a span of 12 games.
But St. Joe would score six unanswered, beginning with a pair in the fourth to take the lead. Mark Burke grounded out to score the tying run, with Cody Nowlin scoring the go ahead run with a two out single. It was Nowlin's first RBI since June 3 and put St. Joe ahead, 2-1.
Quintana had a double and a home run and extended his hitting streak to a league-high 13-consecutive games. Scooter Jordan also had a pair of hits and has reached safely in all 32 games.
That would be enough for Jesen Merle (2-1) and four relievers as Shreveport did not score after the first. The âSnakes tacked on two more in the seventh on Wil Quintana's ninth home run of the year, and fourth in five games. They added single runs in each the eighth and ninth to put the game away, 6-1.
Merle-making his first career start-tossed five strong innings, allowing just three hits and a run for the victory. The bullpen combined to allow just three hits in four scoreless frames.
The Blacksnakes now can look for their first road sweep of the year with a win Sunday afternoon. The finale starts at 2:05pm from Shreveport, with Evan Thomas (2-4) starting against the Sports' Bert Snow (3-1). The broadcasts starts at 1:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show. The team then heads home for a three-game homestand that begins Monday against St. Paul at 7:05pm with Margarita Monday at Phil Welch Stadium.
