
Sports celebrities join L.A. County Day celebration on Sunday

Professional sports teams and representatives of 23 countries will join County officials and employees at the Second Annual Los Angeles County Day at the Los Angeles County Fair on Sunday, Sept. 10.
County Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky and Don Knabe and District Attorney Steve Cooley will be among those participating in the event at the Fairplex in Pomona.
Among the sports guests will be Los Angeles Galaxy President and General Manager and recent inductee into the National Soccer Hall of Fame Alexi Lalas; Los Angeles Dodgers 1965 World Series hero "Sweet Lou" Johnson; Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy President and former California Angels Darrell Miller; Long Beach Ice Dogs Managing General Partner/Owner Steven Bash, players Alex Kim and Donald Johnson and mascot "Spike"; Chivas USA "mascot "Chiva Fighter"; and Los Angeles Avengers "A-Team" Lindsey and Katie.
The festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. in Thunder Alley. The L.A. County Expo Area will feature 30 County department and eight professional sports team booths. Fair guests will be able to meet and greet as well as receive autographs from the various sports stars, owners, general managers, mascots and cheerleaders. The County booths will feature information about County programs and services.
The highlight of the day will be a parade - themed "Los Angeles County: A Great Team" -- that kicks off at noon on Broadway.
Supervisors Yaroslavsky and Knabe and D.A. Cooley will lead the way and will be joined by County department heads and their employees, members of sports teams, and approximately 150 representatives of 23 countries dressed in their native costumes.
The countries are: Afghanistan, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, People's Republic of China, Columbia, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Korea, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Sri Lanka, and Sweden.
A race in the County's honor will be held at the race track at 2 p.m.
On display during the entire run of the fair is the County's "We're Great Sports" exhibit located in Building #4. The exhibit was awarded a silver ribbon at the 2006 California State Fair in Sacramento. Fair guests will be able to test their sports trivia knowledge at the "Did You Know" wall as well as enter into an interactive room featuring a video presentation on the 100-plus year history of L.A. County sports. Children will be able to experience playing either Arena Football or National Hot Rod Association video games. The award-winning exhibit features a three-level display case of sports memorabilia that is available for a silent auction benefiting the County's charitable giving program.
