NEW YORK (Monday, May 4, 2015) - Sporting Kansas City midfielder Benny Feilhaber was voted Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month by fans on MLSsoccer.com for the month of April for the 2015 MLS season.
The veteran midfielder was a force in the Sporting KC midfield, racking up two goals and three assists in four games and helping the club to a 1-1-2 record in the month of April. Feilhaber was instrumental in Sporting KC's come-from-behind win over the Philadelphia Union on April 5, recording two assists, including the game-winner. Feilhaber jumpstarted the comeback in the 16th minute, providing a pin-perfect corner kick for forward Dom Dwyer who headed it past Union goalkeeper Rais M'Bolhi. Feilhaber added another in the 94th minute, when his corner kick was flicked on by Matt Besler to Krisztian Nemeth who poked the ball home from close range to seal the win.
Feilhaber was extremely influential again in Sporting KC's wild 4-4 draw with the Houston Dynamo on April 25, scoring his first two goals of the season. After Dynamo defender Jermaine Taylor was sent off for handling the ball inside the box, Feilhaber stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick and blasted his shot into the bottom right corner - his first career spot kick goal - to level things at 3-3 in the 80th minute. The U.S. Men's National Team player would cap off a dominant performance by again leveling the game in stoppage time. Feilhaber brought down Graham Zusi's headed pass outside of the box and drilled a laser past flailing Houston goalkeeper Tyler Deric to send SKC home with a share of the spoils while leaving the Dynamo fans stunned.
Sporting Kansas City returns to MLS action this Saturday, when they take on D.C. United at 7:00 p.m. ET at RFK Stadium (MLS LIVE).
Voting for MLS Player of the Month presented by Etihad is open to public. The five final nominees are chosen by MLSsoccer.com editorial staff.
