Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
A sanctioned sport stacking tournament is coming to Modern Woodmen Park as the River Bandits will play host to the 2010 World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA) River Bandits Sport Stacking Tournament.
Some of the country's best stackers will be present on Saturday, July 17 to show what it takes be an elite stacker. Headlining the field are a number of key representatives from Team USA. Chase Werfel, who is credited with being the second fastest stacker in the world, along with his siblings Emily and Matt, will be at Modern Woodmen Park to display their stacking skills.
"We are pleased to welcome such a unique sport to our venue," said Dave Heller, the River Bandits owner. "We are always looking for different ways to entertain our fans and new, creative uses for Modern Woodmen Park - and this achieves both goals. The tournament should be a lot of fun, and gives the world's best stackers a great opportunity to showcase their sport in front of new fans. And anytime we have a chance to bring the world's best at any sport to the Quad Cities, I'm all for it!"
Sport stacking is an individual and team sport that consists of stacking specially designed plastic cups into specific sequences and then taking them down in the fastest time possible. Competitors stack cups into pyramids made up of 3, 6, or 10 cups. The sequences stackers can choose to complete are the 3-3-3 stack, the 3-6-3 stack, or the cycle stack.
The tournament begins at 9 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. Anyone can participate in this tournament and no experience in sport stacking is required. The age groups range from four years old and under to senior citizens. Each age group has individual, doubles, and team relay competitions. Events consist of the 3-3-3 stack, the 3-6-3 stack, and the cycle stack. For those with disabilities that wish to compete, the WSSA offers a Special Stacker division.
"Sport stacking is a unique sport that emphasizes hand-eye coordination, quickness, dexterity and focus," said River Bandits General Manager Kirk Goodman. "It's a niche sport that is rapidly growing in popularity for people of all ages and we're happy to welcome this tournament to Modern Woodmen Park."
The 2010 WSSA River Bandits Sport Stacking Tournament will take place at Modern Woodmen Park. Stackers can pre-register for $30. Registration the day of the tournament will be $35. Entry for non-stackers is $5. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the Bandit Scholars program.
