Spokane Snags Top Spot in AFL vPower Rankings

July 23, 2013 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release

CHICAGO - The Spokane Shock (13-4) took hold of the top spot in the Week 19 Arena Football vPower Rankings, as tabulated on AFLFieldPass.com. The reshuffling of the rankings marks the first time in nearly three months the defending ArenaBowl-champion Arizona Rattlers (14-3) did not come in at No. 1.

Spokane made a statement in their return to "Deaf Valley" in Week 18, pummeling the San Antonio Talons (9-8), 77-33. With the win, the Shock locked up the No. 3 seed in the National Conference playoffs. Spokane will close out the regular season at home on Friday, hosting the Pittsburgh Power (4-13) at 10:00 p.m. ET.

The Philadelphia Soul (12-5) won their seventh straight to move up two spots to No. 2 in this week's vPower Rankings. Clint Dolezel's squad made the cross-country trip to San Jose to knock off the SaberCats (12-5), 65-43. The Soul will finish out the regular season at the Alamodome against San Antonio. With a win or a loss by the Jacksonville Sharks (11-6), the Soul can clinch the No. 1 seed in the American Conference playoffs.

Dropping down to No. 3 are the Arizona Rattlers, who will look to rebound in Week 19 following a 42-63 loss at home to the fifth-ranked Chicago Rush (10-7) over the weekend. The Rattlers have already locked up the top seed in the National Conference and home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the postseason, but will no doubt try to head into postseason play on a high note. The West Division champions square off with the Iowa Barnstormers (6-11) in Des Moines on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 8:05 p.m. ET.

With quarterback Bernard Morris back on the field after missing several weeks due to injury, the Jacksonville Sharks moved up three spots to No. 4 in the vPower Rankings, knocking off the New Orleans VooDoo (5-12), 58-49, in Week 18. The Sharks will look to complete a perfect sweep versus American Conference opponents with a win over the Tampa Bay Storm at home in Week 19. A win coupled with a Philadelphia loss would result in Jacksonville clinching the No. 1 seed in the American Conference playoffs. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Aided by three touchdowns from Reggie Gray and a triplet of interceptions by Vic Hall, the Chicago Rush upset the Arizona Rattlers in Week 18, 63-42. The win positioned the Rush to officially claim the Central Division title in Week 19. The team will travel to San Jose this week for a matchup with the San Jose SaberCats, who dropped to sixth in this week's vPower Rankings. Kickoff is set for 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
