Spokane Empire News Release
SPOKANE, Washington (August 30, 2015) - The Empire has signed wide receiver J.J. Hayes to their 2017 IFL roster.
Hayes (WR, 6-4, 210, Lamar) joins the Empire for his fifth season as a member of the IFL and second year in Spokane. During the 2016 regular season, J.J. was second on the team in receptions (62), receiving yards (685), and receiving touchdowns (14). He also added 19 rush attempts for 64 yards and four scores.
"J.J. Hayes is our emotional leader and a very important part of our offensive production," said Empire Head Coach Adam Shackleford. "He probably has the best hands of any receiver I've ever coached and can make tough catches look easy, plus he's very good at creating big plays after the catch."
In 2015 season with Wichita Falls, Hayes played in ten games and led the Nighthawks receiving effort with 43 receptions for 470 yards and seven touchdowns. In 2014 in 13 games with the Cedar Rapids Titans, he hauled in 39 receptions for 451 yards and ten touchdowns. As a rookie with the IFL's Chicago Slaughter in 2013, Hayes played in six games and recorded 22 receptions for 314 yards and four touchdowns while adding 17 kick returns for 293 yards (17.2 yards per return). In 2013, Hayes also spent time with the AFL's Jacksonville Sharks.
Hayes finished his collegiate career at Lamar University (TX) where he led the Cardinals in every major receiving category during his senior season. His 53 receptions for 951 yards and eight touchdowns earned him All-Conference recognition. To this day, Hayes still holds the Cardinals record for most receiving yards in a game with 212 against Northwestern State in 2011.
Before attending Lamar, Hayes played at Navarro Junior College (TX) where he earned an honorable mention All-SWJC Conference honors. He is originally from Diboll, Texas.
