Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON - The Spitfires ended their 3 games in as many nights with a clash at home versus the Owen Sound Attack. They started the weekend off with a big come from behind victory over Erie on Thursday but fell to the Knights in London on Friday. The Spitfires and Attack have split the season series so far as Owen Sound won 12-3 in November and the Spitfires won 4-3 in a shootout ahead of the Christmas break. On Saturday the Spitfires...
In the first period, the Spitfires and Attack would battle it out in a contested affair. It was the Spitfires breaking the deadlock first on the powerplay. A point shot from Smith landed in front of the goal and the Spitfires whacked away at the loose puck before Morneau tucked in his 8th on the year. Less than seven minutes later, the Spitfires would double their lead to 2-0. Greentree and Nesbitt went in on a 2 on 2 break and Greentree's rebound landed on the stick of Nesbitt and he buried his 5th of the season. The shots were 13-12 in favour of the Attack after the first period.
In the second period, it looked eerily similar to the Erie game as the Spitfires fell asleep and let the lead slip away. It took all of 12 seconds for the Attack to get on the board and they followed it up with 2 more goals to take a 3-2 lead. However, the difference to Erie was the Spitfires fought back in the period and were able to tie it back up at 3. Morneau scored his 2nd of the night on a scramble in front of the net. Just 37 seconds later the Spitfires would restore their lead. Davis on the side boards got the puck down low to Abraham and he slid a back-door pass to Cristoforo and he tapped in his 5th of the season. The Spitfires were up 4-3 on the scoreboard but trailed in shots 24-23.
In the third period, it was another tightly contested period as both teams were looking for the games next goal. With just over 6 minutes remaining, Cristoforo flipped an alley-oop pass to Spellacy and he was in a long before getting his stick chopped out of his hands and was awarded a penalty shot. On the penalty shot, Spellacy would go in and score give the Spitfires a 5-3 lead. A few seconds later, the Spitfires were sent to the PK. The Attack would score to narrow the lead to 5-4. Three minutes later with time dwindling down the Spitfires would cash in on the empty net. Davis and Abraham stole the puck before #12 would score his 20th of the season. Just 36 seconds later, the Spitfires would really seal the deal with a goal from Smith and a great feed by Morneau.
The Spitfires capped of the weekend with a big 7-4 win over the Attack and a four point weekend.
The Spitfires are back in action on valentines day for a matchup against the Brantford Bulldogs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.
