Windsor Spitfires News Release
WINDSOR, ON. The Spitfires were looking to continue their momentum heading into Thursday night's contest. The Spitfires had a 3-0 shutout in Guelph to cap off a 5-game road trip. They had their eyes set on the Colts who beat the Spitfires just one week ago 4-1.
In the first period, the Spitfires had a few powerplay opportunities and a heavy shot advantage of 15-7 through the frame. Late in the period, the Spitfires would cash in on the powerplay. The puck bounced off of Outwater's stick to Nesbitt in front and the rookie scored his third of the year. It was the lone goal of the period; Woodall had the 2nd assist.
In the second frame, the Spitfires powerplay continued to excel as they cashed in again. A sweet passing play went from Peer to Davis to Cristoforo at the point and he let one rip for his 2nd of the year. Just under 10 minutes later, the Spitfires would get some much-needed insurance. Zhugin got the puck to Peer and he fed Woodall at the point. He shot it through a crowd in front and went bardown for his first career OHL goal. The Spitfires had a commanding 3-0 lead after 40 minutes and a 24-13 shot advantage.
In the third period, the Spitfires were content to trap it up and let the clock run down. The Colts were coming off a game last night and just ran out of gas. Late in the game, the Spitfires Zhugin would score on the empty net to make it 4-0. The Spitfires were sent to a late powerplay when the Colts were assessed a delay of game penalty for shooting the puck out of play. On the ensuing powerplay, the Spitfires would bobble the puck at the Barrie blueline and give up a 2 on 0 the other way and the Colts would score. This ended Michelone's shutout streak at 130:29 minutes.
The Spitfires got a much needed two points with a 4-1 victory to kick off the homestand.
The Spitfires are back in action on Saturday for Country Night when the Generals come to town. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm. On Sunday, the Firebirds are in town for our annual Teddy Bear Toss Game. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:05pm.
