Spirit Comeback Nets Point in 4-3 Overtime Loss to Bulls

(Belleville, ON) The Saginaw Spirit squared off against the Eastern Conference leading Belleville Bulls Saturday night. The Bulls beat the Spirit 4-3 in overtime, but not before the Spirit posted a big two goal comeback in the final four minutes of the game to push the contest into overtime. The Spirit gained a point in the effort, for a total of 66 points and a record of 30-19-2-4. The Spirit are in third place in the OHL Western Conference, two points ahead of the fourth place Guelph Storm (64 points).

The Bulls gained a 1-0 early in the game, courtesy a power play goal from winger Eric Tangradi (NHL ANAHEIM DUCKS) at 14:20 in the first. Defenseman Shawn Lalonde (NHL CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS) and winger Bryan Cameron (NHL LOS ANGELES KINGS) tallied assists on the play. Saginaw winger Chris Chappell responded quickly, finishing out a tic-tack-toe play featuring assists from center Jack Combs and winger Jordan Szwarz to even the contest 1-1. The power play maker came at 16:11 in the period.

Belleville defenseman P.K. Subban (NHL MONTREAL CANADIENS) regained the lead for the Bulls with a goal at 4:31 in the second period, assisted by winger Brandon Mashinter and center Cory Tanaka. The Bulls momentum carried into the third period, where Cameron would extend the Belleville lead to 3-1 with a power play goal at the 9:51 mark. Subban and Lalonde assisted on the goal.

The Spirit reduced the deficit in the later part of the third, moving the score to 3-2 with a goal at the 16:11 mark. Defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) notched his tenth goal of the season with a power play marker assisted by winger Joe Pleckaitis and defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES). The Spirit continued to apply pressure, pulling goalie Edward Pasquale in the final minute for an extra attacker. The move paid off, with extra attacker Jordan Skellett tying up the game and pushing the contest into overtime. The game tying goal was tallied at 19:23 in the third, courtesy assists from center Tyler Murovich and Chappell.

The two teams battled for the game in the following 4-on-4 five minute overtime. The Bulls pulled out the victory however, with Tangradi assisting winger Nick Palmieri (NHL NEW JERSEY DEVILS) in scoring a goal 2:49 into the extra frame.

Saginaw Spirit netminder Edward Pasquale posted 41 saves on 45 shots, while Belleville Bulls goalie Mike Murphy tallied 34 saves on 37 shots.
