September 8, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MA - After 12 years without a playoff game, playoff baseball returns to LeLacheur Park tonight, September 8, when the Stedler Division Champion Lowell Spinners, Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, take on the McNamara Division Champion Staten Island Yankees.
The match-up, pitting the two hottest teams in the New York-Penn League, is a best-of-three series starting in Lowell with tonight's 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The series then travels to Staten Island where the two teams will meet for Game Two Wednesday, Sept. 9. Game Three, if necessary, would be Thursday, Sept. 10 in Staten Island.
The Spinners are riding high into the playoffs, having clinched their second consecutive Stedler Division Title Sept. 2 in Oneonta (NY). Winners of 14 of their last 18 games, the Spinners will throw staff ace and New York-Penn League All-Star Jose Alvarez (8-3, 1.52) in Game One. Alvarez, who set the Spinners franchise record for wins in 2009, is 1-1 against the Yankees in 2009, having shut out the Yankees over six innings at LeLacheur Park, while taking a loss in Staten Island.
Overall Lowell split the season series with the Yankees, 3-3, having swept Staten Island in a three game series at LeLacheur Park July 1-3, only to have the Yankees return the favor when the Spinners traveled to the Big Apple for the Fourth of July, as Staten Island swept the Spinners out of New York July 4-6.
The first 1,000 fans in attendance Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park will receive Extreme Blue the Frisbee Dog Bobble Heads, courtesy of Belvidere Veterinary Hospital, and great tickets are still available from $5-$8.
The Spinners Box Office is open throughout the day leading up to gates opening at 5:30 and first pitch at 7:05. Call 978-459-1702 for more ticket information.
