Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced Wednesday the return of the Spinners High School World Series to LeLacheur Park Monday and Tuesday, May 20-21.

Back-to-Back Champion Lowell High School returns to defend their title in the annual four team tournament, as they will look to fend off challenges from Billerica High School, Chelmsford High School and Tewksbury High School, returning to the tournament in 2013 in place of 2012's fourth place finisher, Andover.

The teams compete not only for the pride, but a 3-foot Canaligator Bobble Head trophy which rests in the winning school's halls for a full year. In addition, the consolation game eliminates one team from the 2014 competition to allow new schools to cycle into the tournament yearly.

The tournament gets started Monday, May 20 at 5 p.m. when Billerica takes on tournament Tewksbury, with Chelmsford taking on the defending champion Red Raiders of Lowell in the night cap at 7 p.m.

"We are delighted to offer these incredible student-athletes a chance to take the same field that Will Middlebrooks and Jacoby Ellsbury once patrolled," said Spinners President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. "These games give the kids a chance to be treated like a professional on the big stage."

The tournament will continue Tuesday, May 21 with the Consolation Game at 5 p.m., with the loser of that game being eliminated from the 2014 tournament. The championship game is again set for 7 p.m., dependant on the end time of the first game.

Between the games on Tuesday, one senior athlete from each of the four participating teams will be awarded a $500 scholarship based upon leadership qualities and social responsibility displayed within their local communities.

"This isn't an award for on-field performance, rather this is in appreciation for the work of these young men within the community," said Bawmann. "We wish all the graduating seniors all the best in their next step."

The Spinners will have the concessions stands up and running and the players will be treated to stat lines and video board headshots for each at-bat. Admission for the game is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Seniors and children 12 & under are free, with gates opening at 4 p.m. each day.
