Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced a partnership with The Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank and The Lowell Sun to honor local members, active and retired, of our armed services with Military Hero Baseball Card Set Giveaway Night, as we turn to the public for hero nominations.
The non-traditional baseball card set will feature men and women from throughout the Merrimack Valley who have served our country. The 35 card set will be given away to the first 1,000 fans through the gate Sunday, August 4 with the families and heroes themselves in attendance.
"This is such a unique promotion where the only downside to it will be narrowing the field to the 35 that go into the card set," said Spinners President and General Manager Tim Bawmann. "We hope to make this an annual giveaway where we can be continuously saluting those brave men and women who have sacrificed for us."
The Spinners are calling on people throughout the Merrimack Valley to nominate their friends, family, co-workers and neighbors. Nominations can be made at www.lowellspinners.com/lowellfivehero now through Friday, July 12 and the "roster" will be released shortly thereafter.
With nominations now being accepted, the card set does have its first two members:
Ron Caruso served in the United States Marine Corps between 1969-1970 in Vietnam where he was decorated with the Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Constantine "Charlie" Spanos served in the Army from 1942-1945. He survived 10 months in deplorable conditions in a German POW camp and was awarded five medals: the Prisoner of War Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle east Campaign Medal and American Campaign Medal. Robert (Bob) Harbour enlisted in the Navy in 1943 at the age of 18, serving his country from 1943-1946, earning the ranking as a Fireman, First Class. He was the recipient of the WWII Victory, Asiatic Pacific, Philippine Liberation (2 stars) and Asiatic, Pacific (5 stars) medals. "Ron, Charlie and Bob not only served our country valiantly, but they have been upstanding members of the Merrimack Valley community throughout their lives," said Bawmann. "We couldn't be prouder to have them as part of the set."
For more information on nominating a member of the community for the set, visit www.lowellspinners.com or www.lowellspinners.com/lowellfivehero.
