Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced their 2011 coaching staff Wednesday evening, welcoming back 2007 Spinners coach Carlos Febles as the field manager, part of a revamped coaching staff for the 2011 season.

Febles succeeds Bruce Crabbe, who led the 2010 Spinners to a 24-50 record. Crabbe will manage the Hi-A Salem Red Sox in 2011.

A native of El Seibo, Dominican Republic, Febles initially came up through the Kansas City Royals system as a top prospect, debuting as a starter in 1999. He finished his playing career with the Red Sox in 2004, playing the season at Triple-A Pawtucket, before making his coaching debut in Lowell in 2007 on Gary DiSarcina's staff, helping lead the Spinners to a 40-36 record. He has spent the previous three seasons as the hitting coach at Salem.

Febles will be joined on staff by pitching coach Paul Abbott, a new addition to the Red Sox organization. Abbott, who pitched in the Major Leagues for parts of 11 seasons, has most recently served as an assistant coach at Fullerton Junior College and pitching coach with the Orange County Flyers of the Golden Baseball League. Abbott replaces Laz Guttierez, who served as both the Spinners pitching coach and an area scout in 2010.

The team's hitting coach is listed as TBA and there was no biographical information available on TBA at this time. George Lombard, who worked with an extremely young group of Spinners hitters in 2010, moves to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox where he will serve as the team's manager.

Head Athletic Trainer Mauricio Elizondo will return to Lowell for a second season, with a hitting coach to be named at a later date. The Spinners open their 2011 season, presented by Lowell General Hospital, against the Connecticut Tigers June 17 at LeLacheur Park .
