Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, SC-The Charleston Battery remains the lone unbeaten side in USL-1 topping Miami F.C. Blues 1-0 Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Darren Spicer netted the game-winner finishing off a Nelson Akwari header in the 77th minute.
The win moves the Battery (3-0-4, 13 points) into a three-way tie at the top of the USL-1 table with Carolina and Rochester. The Battery host Rochester (4-2-1, 13 points) Saturday night.
Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock earned his league-leading fifth clean sheet on the season, and second in consecutive matches. Hudock recorded three saves on the evening and enters next Saturday's match having not conceded a goal in 197 minutes.
"Miami came out with a defensive game plan tonight. It worked for about 65 or 70 minutes but then we finally started to wear them down," said Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser.
Spicer's goal came as the result of a Tsuyoshi Yoshitake free kick from the right flank finding Akwari on the far post. Akwari headed the ball back across the crowded goalmouth for Spicer to push in. It was Spicer's first goal of the 2009 season.
"Nelly did a great job betting the ball back across," Spicer said. "All I had to do was be there."
Midfielder Kenji Treschuck, who started in the central midfield in the absence of the injured Ian Fuller, nearly doubled the score in injury time, forcing Miami goalkeeper Pat Hanning to save spectacularly to his left. Treschuk fired in from just outside the box after a nice pass from Scott Buete but Hanning managed to turn the ball around the post.
Next up for the Charleston Battery is co-leader Rochester on Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in game two of a three-game home stand. Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ($10 - $18, (843) 971-GOAL / charlestonbattery.com).
