
SPHL Mourns Loss of Knoxville Sports Writer Nick Gates

CHARLOTTE, NC - The SPHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of former Knoxville Ice Bears beat writer Nick Gates.
Gates, who covered who covered Knoxville hockey from 1988-2010 for the Knoxville News Sentinel, passed away early Monday.
"The SPHL lost a good man today," stated President Jim Combs. "I had the privilege of getting to know Nick personally over the past several years and had the chance to sit and talk hockey with him earlier this season. Nick was professional in every sense of the word and he will be missed."
Gates also covered Knoxville's minor-league baseball teams for the News Sentinel from 1972 until his retirement in 2010 and was a three-time Southern League Sportswriter of the Year.
