SPHL concludes winter meetings

Published on January 16, 2007 under SPHL (SPHL) News Release

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Southern Professional Hockey League concluded their winter meetings in Hilton Head, SC after completing a full agenda covering all aspects of the league's operation.

The meetings were opened by Chairman Keith Jeffries (Huntsville) with an overall view of the season to date. There was a general feeling of optimism and all teams were pleased with the improved quality of play in the league's third season.

The meeting was opened by reviewing the changes made to the teams' playing schedules necessitated by the departure of the Florida Seals. All changes were approved by the Board.

Presentations, seeking extension of current agreements, were made by Jack Pennington of Penn Atlantic (league wide video), Scott Secord of Pointstreak (team and league stats and live update of games in progress) and Richard Keast of Sher-Wood (player equipment). All three companies were successful in their bid to extend their contracts with the SPHL.

Jim Combs, the league Director of Officials (DOO) addressed the board on issues with officiating. Mr. Combs explained how his department was increasing supervision of on-ice officials with the help of USA Hockey and the NHL. He advised that there would be an increase in supervisors at games over the second half of the season and introduced an "on-ice official's evaluation program" wherein coaches and GM's would grade officials to assist in their development.

The 2007-2008 season will consist of 52 regular season games.

In keeping with their pre-season program, the teams will all wear their light jerseys at home for the second half of the season. The first half all teams wore their dark jerseys so that fans would see both sets during the season.

The Board of Governors will next meet for their annual summer meetings June 10-12, 2007 in Florence, SC, home of the Pee Dee Cyclones.
