Spencer Sapp Dominates as Bombers Improve to 2-0

Dubois County Bombers News Release

Spencer Sapp, a Jasper native, tossed seven innings scoreless innings as the Dubois County Bombers beat the Springfield Sliders 3-0 Wednesday night in their home opener to improve to 2-0.

Before an energized crowd of 328, Sapp, who just finished his freshman year at Indiana University, struck out seven batters and gave up only two hits - one on a bunt he accidentally turned into a single by attempting a diving catch - and walked two.

"I felt great," Sapp said. "It felt good to get back on the mound."

Sapp missed his senior season at Jasper High School after he underwent Tommy John surgery and only pitched six and one-third innings for IU.

"I had my stuff, but I didn't quite have my velocity," Sapp said. "My old coach told me I was around 82-84 [miles per hour] when I used to throw 86 and could touch 88."

Sliders pitcher Adam Peters threw a good game, as well, but the Bombers manufactured two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With right fielder Adam Guinn standing on second with two outs, center fielder Austin Nyman dumped a single into left center field to drive him in.

Nyman himself would score two batters later, after a Sliders error, on second baseman Bo Ausmus' RBI single to left. Peters finished his five innings after allowing only one earned run.

Dubois County tacked on another run in the seventh when Dalton Rouleaux - who reached after crushing a double to center - scored on a fly ball by catcher Chris Tavaras that Sliders right fielder Chase Hairline misjudged and overran for an error.

Ty Simpson closed out the last 2 innings as the Bombers did not allow Springfield back into the game.

Sapp could not have asked for a better environment to make his return.

"It felt like there were a lot of fans here to cheer me on," he said. "It's nice to have support on the field and in the stands."

The Bombers take to the road for two games in Hannibal and one in Terre Haute before returning home to face Terre Haute Sunday night at 6:15. Remember to tune in to http://www.teamline.cc/sportpage?teamcode=2946&eventcode=5 to listen to the Bombers on the road.
