Speed Losing Streak At 8 Games

March 23, 2002 - United Hockey League (UHL)
Knoxville Speed News Release

KNOXVILLE, TN – The Knoxville Speed is still looking for win #20 after losing 9-1 to the New Haven Knights tonight at the Civic Coliseum. Tonight's Speed loss extended their losing streak to 8-games.

Power plays went perfect for both teams in the first period, but New Haven's even strength goal by Glenn Stewart at 14:35 put them ahead by one. Kenzie Homer scored first for the Knights at 2:13 on a "delay" penalty called on Knoxville goaltender Mike Summerfeldt. At 9:21, Alain Savage took advantage of New Haven's bench minor for "too many men" on the ice and scored his 22nd of the year.

The Knights came out strong with Chris Cerrella leading the pack in the second period. At 3:44, Cerrella scored his 4th power play goal of the year to put New Haven up by two. Then scoring back-to-back goals, Homer earned his first hat trick of the season at 14:51 putting the Knights up 5-1.

Knoxville began the period with a change in goaltending, but it wasn't the boost they needed to get them back into the game. Stewart scored back-to-back goals for his second hat trick of the season to make it 7-1. Bill Newson and Kelly Popadynetz finished the night scoring even strength goals.

The Speed wraps up the United Hockey League 2001-2002 season nest weekend. Friday night is their final home game at the Civic Coliseum against the Asheville Smoke. Game time is 7:35pm. All HOME game worn player jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game. Season player awards will be presented on the ice immediately following the game.
