Butler BlueSox News Release
Jamestown, NY - July 26, 2015 - With a 1-2-3 ninth inning on Sunday, Butler BlueSox' closer Zach Spangler became the new single-season record holder for saves in the Prospect League.
A native of Cranberry Township and graduate of Seneca Valley High School, Spangler has secured 17 saves for Butler this season in 22 appearances. Over his 21.2 innings of work, he has struck out 23 opposing batters while walking just six. He has blown just two save opportunities.
Entering the season's final week and a half, Spangler has more saves than nine of the Prospect League's 12 teams. One of Butler's four All-Stars, he threw a scoreless inning with a strikeout in the All-Star Game earlier this month.
The 6'4" redshirt freshman at Kent State has kept opposing batters off-balance with his side-arm delivery. Spangler had a single save in 17 relief appearances for the Golden Flashes, striking out ten and ending the spring with a 3.18 ERA.
Having surpassed the BlueSox' saves record of 13, which was set by 2012's Adam Dian, a few weeks ago, Spangler surpassed Chase Byerly of the 2011 Slippery Rock Sliders' tally of 16 on Sunday in Jamestown. Butler won the game after scoring their only three runs with two outs in the top of the ninth inning.
The BlueSox will look to Spangler to help them into the post-season. They trail Chillicothe by 3.5 games with eleven games remaining.
