Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT - June 30, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (24-40) were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (37-27) 4-3 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Tuesday night. Southern Maryland improves to 30-0 when leading after seven innings, and 26-0 when leading after eight innings, and their magic number to clinch the Freedom Division now stands at two.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Chad Povich (0-1) suffered the loss, pitching four innings, surrendering four runs on five hits, striking out five while not walking a batter and allowing one home run. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Chien-Ming Wang picked up the win, tossing six innings, giving up three runs (two earned runs) on six hits, walking one and striking out five. Erik Hamren pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two, for his team leading 18th save.
Southern Maryland took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning off Povich on a run-scoring double by Casey Stevenson, plating Fred Lewis who led off the game with a triple to straight away center field. The Blue Crabs added three more runs to take the 4-0 edge in the second inning, with all three runs coming with two outs. Casey Frawley's RBI singled brought home Jake Opitz, who led off the frame with a double. Lewis then launched an opposite field two-run home run to left, his second roundtripper of the season. Lewis was a double shy of the cycle, picking up three hits.
Bridgeport cut the deficit to 4-1 in the second inning on a run scoring double by Andres Rodriguez, bringing home John Alonso who led off the inning with a single. The 'Fish added a run in the third inning to trim the lead to 4-2 on an RBI groundout by Josh Prince, scoring Matt Wessinger who led off with a single. It was the first run batted in for Prince in a Bluefish uniform. The deficit became just a single run at 4-3 in the fifth inning on an RBI infield single by James Simmons, scoring Luis Antoino Rodriguez who doubled with one out. The hit by Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to a season high nine consecutive games and his on base streak to 13 straight games, but that was as close as Bridgeport would get as Southern Maryland evened up the five game series. Luis Antonio Rodriguez and Simmons led the way for the Bluefish with two hits each.
