Southern League Names Pitcher and Player of the Week

Published on September 8, 2015 under Southern League (SL1) News Release

MARIETTA, GA - The Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announces its Pitcher and Player of the Week for the extended week of August 31 through September 7. Lefthander Cody Reed of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos was selected as the Pitcher of the Week while Jackson Generals centerfielder Ian Miller earned Player of the Week honors.

Over a league-high 14.0 innings pitched in two starts last week, Blue Wahoos southpaw Cody led the loop with a 2-0 record, a clean 0.00 ERA and 17 strikeouts. More importantly, Reed helped pace his club to the South Division's Second Half Division Championship, the first in franchise history. In his first outing of the week, a 1-0 victory on Jackson on August 31, the Memphis native went eight scoreless innings, fanning eight Generals, while giving up just four hits. Six days later, Reed took the mound for what would be the division-clinching victory, a 15-2 win over the visiting Mobile BayBears. Over six frames, the Northwest Mississippi CC product struck out nine batters, while allowing two unearned runs on just three hits. This is his third award this season, and second Southern League pitching honor in five weeks.

Jackson Generals centerfielder Ian Miller produced a remarkably consistent week with a .464 batting average, 12 hits, four extra-base hits, 18 total bases, three doubles, four stolen bases, a .643 slugging percentage and OPS of 1.091, all numbers good for top five in the league. Hitting safely in all six games played, the Downington, Pennsylvania native had more than one hit in five of those contests. Over a pair of games against the Chattanooga Lookouts in September 4 and 5, Miller combined to go 6-for-9 at the plate with a run and a triple. This is the first career weekly award for the Wagner College product.
