Southern Illinois Miners sign more two players

Marion - The Southern Illinois Miners today announced the signing of two starting pitchers. Joey Martinson and Jon Qualls became the fifth and six players signed by the Miners for their inaugural season.
Martinson, a 6'4, 200 lb starting pitcher led Bethany College (KS) in 2006 to the KCAC Championship with a 10-2 record to go along with 2 saves. He garnered All-Conference, All Region and All-American honors. In addition to his record, he struck out 81 batters in 78 innings pitched while walking only 20. Opposing batters hit a paltry .179 against him, the 5th lowest in the nation in NAIA. He was also selected as the Bethany College "Athlete of The Year" in 2006. Martinson was a 23rd round draft pick by the Texas Rangers.
"Joey has the stuff to be a part of our starting rotation. He has good velocity and command of the strike zone" stated Pinto
Qualls, a 6', 170 lb side armed pitcher comes from Friends University where he was 12-3 during his senior year. During 2006, Qualls was selected MVP of the NBC World Series in Wichita, KS this past summer where he was 3-0 with 3 complete games. In 27 innings, he had an era of 1.00, striking out 17 and walking only 4. Opposing hitters hit only .167 against him.
"Jon is one of those guys who knows how to pitch. He doesn't overpower hitters, they just don't get very good swings against him. Jon has great command of the strike zone and has a rubber arm. I am happy to have him with us this summer" added Pinto.
"Signing Joey and Jon strongly emphasizes Manager Mike Pinto's philosophy on strong pitching. After speaking Mike, I'm excited about what these two individuals can bring to the organization both on and off the field" replied General Manager Tim Arseneau.
