March 6, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (24-1) won their 22nd straight game on Thursday night with a 125-100 victory over the Houston Legends.
The Mustangs controlled the game from beginning to end and never were threatened! The Houston squad was scrappy and pushed the Mustangs at times in the game.
Houston's board work kept them in the game in the first quarter, but Mustangs power forward DeRon Rutledge came out strong in the first period to score 9 points and lead his team to a 32-26 lead after one period of play.
In the second quarter the Mustangs deep bench kept the pressure on and the Mustangs pushed the lead to 15 points and went in up 59-47 at the half.
The third quarter belonged to veteran frontline player Jamaal Davis as Davis scored 8 in the period to push the Mustangs lead to twenty points.
In the fourth quarter as they've done so many times this season the Mustangs rested their starters and played their young developing players. The Mustangs maintained momentum and cruised to another win in their long winning streak that has now reached 22 straight games.
Currye Todd led the Mustangs with 20 points with 3 three pointers on the night. Rutledge scored 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Davis continued his strong play of late with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lamar Sanders contributed 14 points and 6 rebounds. Jerry Williams and Alex Sanders followed up with 13 points each respectively.
The Mustangs will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as they will host the Texas City Rangers at the Ford Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
