Southeast Texas Mustangs Roll to Victory
January 4, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release
The #1 Ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (8-1) did not seem satisfied with their elevation this week as the top ranked team in the ABA Power Rankings, for on Sunday they rolled to a 137-77 home victory vs the Houston Takers.
The Takers came in as the #16 ranked team in the Power Rankings and had played the Mustangs to a close game in the first game of the season when they lost a tough and hard fought game 100-95. There was no comparison today as the Mustangs shifted into another gear that the Takers had no answer for.
Southeast Texas came out on fire in the first quarter as DeRon Rutledge and Lamar Sanders did the damage inside against Houston's 2-3 zone. Tim Pledger and Brian Burrell opened things up with point blank perimeter shooting and Houston quickly found them self's down by double figures. The Mustangs led 35-15 after one quarter.
In the second quarter the Mustangs literally blew the game open with Pledger, Burrell, Sanders, Burrell, Alvin Jefferson, Anthony Lumpkin, and Antonio Lawrence doing the damage both offensively and defensively. The Mustangs cruised by the Takers taking a 70-25 lead into the locker-room at half-time.
Houston's Josh Jones came out with a hot hand to begin the third quarter and scored back to back three pointers. After a Southeast Texas time-out Rutledge scored two quick baskets and the sixty point rout was on. With four minutes to play in the third quarter the Mustangs emptied their bench and played with their back-ups the rest of the way. Keith "BOO" Richardson logged his most minutes of the season in leading the Mustangs in the second half while Pledger got a well deserved rest. Southeast Texas has now won 7 straight games as they prepare to hit the road again as they travel to West Texas and to Houston for late week games against the Whirlwinds and Takers.
Southeast Texas placed seven players in double figures with Burrell leading the way with 29 points. Sanders had a double/double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Pledger chipped in 14 points. Todd scored 12 points. Rutledge in limited minutes and Richardson also scored 11 points. Harris followed up with 10 points. Houston was led by Josh Jones' 22 points (20 in the second half). Chris Green had 16 points. Edward Johnson and Bruce Jolly scored 12 points each respectively.
The Mustangs will be at home again on Thursday night January 15th against the #3 Ranked Texas Fuel. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
