Southeast Texas Mustangs prepare for championship run

March 1, 2009 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Southeast Texas Mavericks News Release

The #1 ranked Southeast Texas Mustangs (23-1) have won the South Division of the ABA, are Winners of 21 straight games, and have held the #1 ranking in the ABA Power Ranking Poll for now a record 8 consecutive weeks (beating the Utah Snowbears record of 7 straight weeks at the top that was set in the 2004-05 season when the Power Ranking Poll first started in the ABA)! The Mustangs also just tied Utah for the second longest winning streak in ABA history with 21 straight wins! The only streak longer in the ABA is the Indiana Alley Cats streak of 26 straight wins that was set in the 2001-02 season. The Mustangs are the talk of all of professional basketball outside the NBA! No franchise in any professional basketball league in the world has done what the Mustangs have done this season in regard to success on the basketball court! The Southeast Texas Mustangs are truly a very special professional basketball team and franchise.

No one knows that better than veteran professional basketball coach and head coach of the Mustangs Steve Tucker. "It has truly been an amazing season to say the least. What this team has done is very special! They've been professional in every way in reference to their preparation and play on the court. They've represented this franchise to the highest standard both on and off the court as well. I'm very proud that what we've done and what we're doing is Setting a Standard of Excellence for all others to follow! It has been a Magical Season indeed!"

The Mustangs revered Winning Streak began on December 14th, 2008 in San Antonio, TX, when the Mustangs defeated the Texas Fuel 104-87. Since that time they've run off 21 straight victories, and in most cases in dominating fashion!

"We just play the game hard in every way! And I believe that our work ethic really helps us overcome a lot of things. The other thing is that we're very deep! We have a great bench and a lot of depth. We call our bench "The Train" and when the train comes in it is not good for our opponents!" states Mustangs combo guard Anthony Lumpkin.

Along with success comes expectations and for the Mustangs they want only one thing, and that is the ABA Championship! Southeast Texas power forward DeRon Rutledge has his mind only on that goal. "I believe I speak for everyone on our team in saying that there is nothing we want more than the ABA Championship! We've got guys on this team that have won professional championships, me included, but I don't think any of us has ever played on a more special team than this one, and we want this ABA Championship in the worst way, and we're committed to winning it this season!"

The quest for a championship will not be an easy one for the Mustangs, for several teams have emerged in recent weeks with the capabilities to win this season's championship in the ABA. The Maywood Buzz (CA), Nashville Broncs (TN), and the Kentucky Bisons (KY) are three powerful franchises that will challenge the Mustangs. There are others out there too in the Texas Fuel (the only team to defeat the Mustangs this season), Beijing Aoshen, and the Cleveland Rockers who are also strong contenders for the ABA Championship.

Yet, somehow with all that said, it just seems this is a team of destiny, this Southeast Texas Mustangs team! It is a team that has been built on character, commitment, and with a high standard of excellence. It will be hard to bet against them as the ABA's part in March Madness takes place in Nashville, TN later this month. It will be interesting indeed to see if the Southeast Texas Mustangs can achieve its goal and bring an ABA Professional Basketball Championship back to the Golden Triangle in Southeast Texas.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
