Iowa Cubs News Release
Angel Salome homered and drove in five runs to lead the Nashville Sounds over the Iowa Cubs, 8-6, Tuesday night at Principal Park. Nashville starter Tim Dillard handed the I-Cubs their fifth straight loss while improving his record to a league-leading 5-0. Mitch Atkins (1-3) took the loss for Iowa.
Salome, who entered the game hitting just .189, tied the game in the second inning with his first homer of the season, a towering three-run shot to center. His two-run double to the right center field gap in the fifth inning chased Atkins and helped the Sounds stretch their lead to 8-3.
Iowa catcher Chris Robinson continued his hot hitting by collecting three doubles and four RBI. With the 3-for-4 night, Robinson has hit safely in eight straight games and in 14 of his 15 starts this season.
Brad Snyder extended his hitting streak to 15 games, finishing the night 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs scored.
Iowa scored three times in the bottom of the first to grab an early 3-0 lead. Jason Dubois was hit by a pitch with the bases full and Robinson dropped a two-run double down the right field line, but Dillard induced a double play off the bat of Andres Blanco to get out of the inning.
The Cubs chipped away at the Nashville lead with two runs in their half of the sixth inning. Robinson's one out double plated Snyder, who had doubled to lead off the inning, and pinch hitter Doug Deeds singled to drive in Robinson two batters later.
Back-to-back doubles by Jason Dubois and Robinson with one out in the eighth cut the Sounds' lead to 8-6, but Nashville reliever Dave Johnson worked out of the jam and closer Chris Smith worked a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
The Cubs and Sounds will meet in the third game of their four game series at Principal Park tomorrow afternoon. Iowa's Jose Ascanio (0-1, 1.25) will oppose former I-Cub Mike Burns (3-0, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
