Nashville Sounds News Release

NASHVILLE — The Nashville Sounds were unable to come up with a victory for a sellout crowd of 10,937 fans at Greer Stadium on Saturday evening as they were held to only two hits in a 9-2 loss to the visiting Las Vegas 51s.

Japanese hurler Masao Kida (1-0) allowed only one hit over five shutout innings to pick up the victory for Las Vegas in his first start since the 2001 season. He opened the year in the Dodgers' spring training camp and missed the entire 2002 season following back surgery.

David Ross led the offensive attack for Las Vegas, going 3-for-4 with his fifth home run of the year, a double, three RBI, and three runs scored in the victory. Larry Barnes also turned in a three-hit effort that included a pair of doubles, and Chin-Feng Chen scored three times for the 51s, who improved their PCL-leading record to 22-8.

Calvin Murray (2-for-5) ripped a two-run triple to cap off the scoring in a four-run Las Vegas sixth against Nashville reliever Shawn Camp.

Both of the Sounds' hits in the game went for extra bases. Outfielder John Barnes broke up the 51s' shutout bid in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-out, two-run double into the left-field corner off Las Vegas reliever Rodney Myers. Second baseman Mike Gulan ripped his PCL-leading 13th double of the year in the fourth inning to record Nashville's first hit of the night.

Justin Reid (1-1) was tagged with the loss in his first start of the year for the Sounds.

The Sounds and 51s continue their series with a 2 p.m. matinee meeting on Sunday afternoon. Nashville right-hander John Wasdin (2-0) will face Las Vegas southpaw Victor Alvarez (1-0).

Contemporary Christian recording artist Caedmon's Call will perform a post-game concert at the ballpark as part of the first of five Faith Nights at Greer Stadium this season.
