(Seattle, WA) - The Seattle Sounders defeated Seattle Pacific University 5-0 in pre-season action Wednesday night at Interbay Stadium.
Fresh off a media day training session at Qwest Field earlier in the day, the Sounders squad found the net early and often as many trialists continued their battle for a roster spot.
Newcomer Andre Schmid got the Sounders on the board in the first half on an assist from Yao Li Jun (China, Shanghai Shenhua). After pin-balling around the 18-yard box, the ball landed on the right foot of Yao who made a nice touch to get the ball to Schmid. The 6'4" forward hit a heavy right-footed shot under a diving Seattle Pacific keeper.
Josh Gardner, who spent the '06 season with the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer(MLS)scored the 2nd Sounders goal near the half hour mark of the 1st half. Schmid was credited with the assist on a nice one-touch that placed the ball on Gardner's prominent left foot.
Gardner figured in the Sounders 3rd strike of the night as he received a ball deep inside the 6-yard line. His shot attempt ran parallel with the goal line before a clearing attempt was left at Yao's foot - he finished low to the right side.
New faces emerged after the halfway mark but it didn't take long for the Sounders to get on the board. Seattle Pacific graduate Colin Rigby made a nice turn after receiving a Craig Tomlinson pass. Rigby's blast as high to the right side of the goal.
A late goal on a controversial non off-side call came courtesy of Santa Maria Rivera.
The Sounders wrap up the week with training sessions at the Starfire Sports Complex before facing the Liga Hispana All-Stars in Everett at Sunday's exhibition game.
The 2007 season officially gets underway on April 21 in Vancouver as the Sounders tangle with the defending USL First Division Champion Whitecaps.
