TRAINING CAMP UPDATE
With the regular season starting April 19, the Sounders coaching staff has been looking at a number of players to round out the roster for the 2008 campaign. Sunday was the second and final open tryout in advance of the 2008 season. This day saw Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer, assistant coaches Bernardo Ruiz, Darren Sawatzky and Seattle MLS technical director Chris Henderson on hand to evaluate talent.
"The guys worked hard," said coach Schmetzer. "The coaching staff and I saw a lot heart and desire."
Monday brought the first day of college week. 20 invitees from all over the country have competed to try and earn a spot with the 2008 Sounders. Among the invitees are Sounder's defender Zach Scott's brother, Daniel Scott, as well as Mason Trafford from UNLV, and Jason Cascio and John Fishbauger from Seattle University . Jamie Watson, who played with Real Salt Lake of the MLS last season, continues his trial with the Sounders.
FIRST TEAM UPDATE
The roster players have been doing some training in the morning, and coming back to either watch or play with the college invitees in the afternoon. While fitness is still a major stressing point in the preseason, with one exhibition game down, the Sounders engaged in more open scrimmages this week.
On the injury front, Noah Merl is back training with the side after sitting out last week recovering from off-season surgery. Goalkeeper Ben Dragavon is also back at full strength after being limited in the last few weeks with a bruised hip.
Mark your calendars, the Sounders home opener is May 10th at Qwest field against the Portland Timbers.
