Philadelphia Soul News Release

NASHVILLE - The Philadelphia Soul (7-5) won their franchise best seventh victory of the season tonight knocking off the Nashville Kats (7-5) 49-33 in front of 9,458 fans at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in downtown Nashville. The Kats came into the game with a previous unbeaten 5-0 home record while the Soul won their third road game of the season.

Tensions were high right from the start, with fights and scuffles sprouting up almost immediately. The last time these teams played (Week 3 of the 2005 season), a similar may lay occurred at the end of the game after former Soul head coach Michael Trigg accused Kats lineman James Barron of spitting in his face.

The Kats got on the board first when QB Clint Stoerner found OS T.T. Toliver for a 38-yard touchdown. Following the score, the scuffle occurred in the endzone which resulted in two Nashville penalties.

The Soul answered on their next possession when QB Matt Sauk threw a pass to OS Steve Smith in the back-right corner of the end zone. Smith pulled the ball in with one hand, tipping the ball back to himself, knotting the score at 7-7.

After a Jason Ball field goal, Philadelphia took their first lead of the game midway through the second quarter when Sean Scott made an acrobatic catch in the back of the endzone extending as high as he could, hauling in the pass in with one hand, and dragging both feet in bounds. At that point, the Soul took the lead, 14-13.

The Soul would take a 21-13 lead into halftime when Scott caught his second touchdown of the game, this time from 15-yards out.

Trailing by eight to start the third quarter, Nashville scored on their first play from scrimmage when Stoerner found an open Toliver from 40-yards out. After a successful two point conversion the game was tied 21-21. The Kats were forced to attempt two-point conversions throughout the second half after Ball was injured in the closing seconds of the first half. Tolliver was responsible was kickoff duties.

The Soul took back the lead on their ensuing possession when WR/DB Mike Brown scampered in from one-yard out. The Soul would outscore the Kats 21-12 over the next 17 minutes and cruised to the victory.

Sauk, filling in for the injured Tony Graziani, complete 20-of-29 passes for 198 yards and six touchdowns. For his efforts he was named Offensive Player of the Game. His main target was Scott, who recorded nine receptions for 103 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 7.5 tackles and a sack while being named Ironman of the Game. Defensive Player of the Game Eddie Moten has another spectacular game totaling 7.5 tackles, an interception (added another one on a two-point conversion), a forced fumble and a pass break-up.

The Soul return to the Wachovia Center this Friday, April 21 when they host the Columbus Destroyers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. The game can be heard on the New SportsTalk 950 AM and via the web at www.philadelphiasoul.com.
