Philadelphia Soul News Release
The Philadelphia Soul will play the defending-champion San Jose SaberCats in Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII. San Jose advanced by defeating the Grand Rapids Rampage 81-55 in the American Conference Championship Game.
San Jose went 11-5 during the regular season, earning the American Conference's second-seed. The SaberCats have the AFL's second highest scoring offense in the league, only trailing Philadephia. San Jose, however, only managed to go 2-4 this season against the National Conference.
The Soul are 1-2 all-time against the SaberCats, the win coming Week 7 this season at San Jose, 58-57. The SaberCats jumped on the Soul early, holding a 33-7 lead late in the first half. The Soul outscored San Jose 44-24 in the second-half, scoring the go-ahead points with just 10 seconds left. Quarterback Matt D'Orazio rushed for the five-yard touchdown, then the Soul opted to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Clifton Smith converted the attempt and the Soul held on to win their seventh-straight game to start the season.
