Philadelphia Soul News Release
PHILADELPHIA â The Philadelphia Soul came to terms with four more free agents today, including kickers J.R. Jenkins and Derek Schorejs. The Soul also inked OL/DL Cory Stone and DS Arkee Thompson. As is club policy, terms of these contracts were not released.
In addition the Soul released eight players from the team's roster: OL/DL Lance Clelland, WR/DB DaShane Dennis, WR/DB Derin Graham, K Ken Hinsley, WR/DB J'Sharlon Jones, WR/DB Ricky Ross, DS Travis Seaton and WR/LB Thomie Venisee.
Jenkins and Schorejs are expected to compete for the Soul's kicking duties in training camp. Soul Head Coach Michael Trigg notes Jenkins' powerful leg and ability to kick off over the nets as his strongest attribute. He made 49 of 52 point-after attempts in 2001 for the Detroit Fury and three of 13 field goal tries. Schorejs brings experience at the NFL, NFL Europe and AFL levels. He most recently played in the AFL with the New Jersey Red Dogs in 2000, when he connected on 71 of 75 PATs.
The duo's signings "show our commitment to improve our scoring and kick ratings that were near the bottom of the AFL last year," Trigg said.
Stone, a six-year AFL veteran out of Tennessee, made five tackles and recovered two fumbles for the Carolina Cobras last year.
"Corey adds needed size and protection skills at the center position," Trigg said. We expect him to compliment Eric Gohlstin and solidify the middle of our offensive line. His veteran experience and leadership will be welcomed."
Thompson, who played in seven games with the Orlando Predators and tallied 18 tackles last season, adds depth along with recently acquired Strath Haven grad Lamar Campbell to the defensive specialist position.
Season tickets for the Philadelphia Soul's sophomore season are on sale now. For more information on season tickets call 1-888-PHIL-AFL or visit www.philadelphiasoul.com. The Soul led the Arena Football League in attendance averaging over 16,866 fans per home game, including six sellouts.
