PHILADELPHIA - For the third time this season the Philadelphia Soul (5-1) scored over 80 points in a game, breaking the all-time team record for points scored in the first half (48) and defeating the Tampa Bay Storm (3-3), 83-48, in front of 9,371 fans at the Wells Fargo Center on Saturday night.
"It was a very impressive performance by our team tonight. Of course we always look to improve next week," said Soul head coach Doug Plank. "One thing we really did well at is not getting ourselves into third-down situations. That's really all because of Dan (Raudabaugh). He and Clint Dolezel are a deadly combination. I wouldn't want to play against them."
Philadelphia's QB Dan Raudabaugh finished by connecting on 16-of-21 passes for 270 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. Tiger Jones had six receptions for 123 yards and four touchdowns, while Emery Sammons had two touchdowns, rushing for four yards and 86 receiving yards. Derrick Ross added seven rushes for 20 yards and two touchdowns. Jeff Hughley had three kickoff returns for 38 yards and three receptions for 59 yards and three touchdowns.
Philadelphia outscored Tampa Bay 21-7 in the first quarter as Raudabaugh completed 5-of-6 passes for three touchdowns. Jones had a pair of touchdown receptions, Hughley added one and Phil Marfuggi completed all three extra-point attempts. Tampa Bay's Prechae Rodriguez scored on a 10-yard pass from Stephen Wasil.
In the second quarter, the Soul again held the Storm to just one touchdown, this time dominating 27-7. The quarter began with a 2-yard scoring run by Ross followed by a 3-yard scoring run by Sammons. Raudabaugh's 17-yard touchdown pass to Hughley and another touchdown run by Ross solidified the Philadelphia lead, ending the first half 48-14, the highest first half score in team history.
Tampa Bay started the scoring in the third quarter when Wasil completed a 25-yard scoring pass to Williams. Jones and Hughley both scored on 21-yard passes from Raudabaugh, but the Storm was able to outscore the Soul in the third, adding scoring runs by Wasil and Tom Kaleita. The third quarter ended with the Soul leading 61-35.
The Soul outscored Tampa Bay 22-13 in the final quarter to give them the victory, 83-48.
The Soul will face the Orlando Predators next Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida. The game will be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet and can be heard on 950 ESPN.
