Eagles take the weekend off, face Johnstown next

The Soo Eagles are idle this weekend, and will resume action on January 25-26, when they host the Johnstown Tomahawks at Pullar Stadium.

On Friday, January 25, there will be a fundraiser for fundraiser for Nick Watson. Nick is a Cheboygan high school goaltender, who sustained a life changing injury during hockey game. The Soo Eagles will match their portion of the 50/50 drawing, to help assist Nick's family with the high medical costs they are incurring.

On Saturday, January 26, there will be a Teddy Bear Toss. All fans attending the game are encouraged to bring a bear. Eagles staff and volunteers will be selling stuffed animals in the lobby for $5.00 and $10.00 (size). All proceeds from the sale of stuffed animals goes to children affected by domestic violence or sexual assault. There will also be a skate with the Eagles after Saturday's game.

Eagles go 1-2 on weekend Eastern road swing The Soo Eagles went 1-2 on their three game road trip last weekend, splitting with the second-place Jamestown Ironmen, and dropping a game to the Johnstown Tomahawks. The Eagles maintain their hold on first place, two points ahead of Jamestown in the North Division.

The Eagles are idle this weekend, and will return to action, in the friendly confines of Pullar Stadium on Friday, January 25 for a pair of games against the Johnstown Tomahawks.

Here is a recap of last weekend's action:

Johnstown Tomahawks 6, Soo Eagles 2 - Sunday, January 13, 2013 The Johnstown Tomahawks snapped their small losing skid with a big 6-2 win over the 1st place Soo Eagles to finish the weekend on a high note.

The Eagles have lost two in a row, and are idle until January 25, when they will play host to the Tomahawks for a pair of games at Pullar Stadium.

Johnstown scored the opening two goals within a :49 second span in the 1st period as Andrew McDonald and Connor Wright lit the lamp for a 2-0 lead.

After a goal from Soo's Pat Thompson, the Tomahawks scored three straight on goals from Jaycob McCombs, Brandon Reinholz and another from McDonald.

Brandon Adams scored for the Eagles in the 3rd period to make it 5-2, but a late goal from captain Mitch Kontny made the final, 6-2.

The Eagles lead in the North Division is now two points, with Jamestown's victory on Sunday. The Ironmen have two games in hand.

Jamestown Ironmen 3, Soo Eagles - Saturday, January 12, 2013 The Soo Eagles lost a game, for the first time since December 9, 2012, as the Jamestown Ironmen earned a 3-2 victory in Jamestown on Saturday.

The Eagles had won 9 straight games.

Luc Gerdes scored twice, including the game-winning goal in the 3rd period as the Ironmen earned the split on the weekend, and their first victory against the Eagles in four tries. They now sit four points behind the first-place Eagles in the North American Hockey League's North Division.

Tyler Minx got the Ironmen on the board first, scoring his first goal in a Jamestown uniform. Gerdes made it 2-0 later in the period. Jared Van Wormer cut the lead to 2-1 in the 2nd period, but Gerdes answered back midway through the 3rd period. Alex Robert added a late Soo goal to make it 3-2.

Zach Nagelvoort made 16 saves for the Eagles.

Soo Eagles 7, Jamestown Ironmen 3 - Friday, January 11, 2013 The Soo Eagles soared to a convincing 7-3 victory over the Jamestown Ironmen in North American Hockey league action Friday night in Jamestown, New York.

Eric Rivard, Michael Covach and Jared Van Wormer all scored in the opening 12 minutes for the Eagles. Sean Murphy, Chris Waterstreet and Michael Crowley added 2nd period goals and Murphy added his second goal in the 3rd period.

Aaron Scheppelman, Tyler Dunagan and Luc Gerdes scored for the Ironmen.

Tyler Marble made 36 saves to earn the victory.

The Eagles' Sean Murphy, who collected three points on Friday night, was named the games first star. Michael Covach and Eric Rivard were named second and third star of the game.
