Soo Eagles Lock up Playoff Spot

The Soo Eagles won two out of three games against the Keystone Ice Miners and secured a playoff spot over the weekend. The Eagles beat the Miners 4-1 Saturday night at Pullar Stadium. Trevor Cope scored two goals, while Denver Pierce and Darren Brady also had goals for the Eagles (30-23-2), who held onto the second-place position in the NAHL North. Chad Catt made 25 saves for the Eagles. The Eagles scored three goals in the opening period. Pierce scored first, assisted by Brad Pung and Raymond Brice. Cope netted a power-play goal, assisted by Pung and Michael Caruso. Cope added his second goal, assisted by Darren Brady and Mitch Vanderburg.

Eagles 2, Miners 1: In a game that was completed after a postponement from early February, the Eagles edged Keystone, 2-1 Friday night. There was no further scoring in the pick-up of the continued game, which was resumed at 2-1 in the third period. Matt Menta and Brad Pung scored in the 1st period, which would be enough for the Eagles.

Miners 4, Eagles 1: Alex Blankenburg made 39 saves as the Ice Miners closed in on a playoff spot with a 4-1 win Friday. After a scoreless first period, Brad Pung opened the scoring for the Eagles. But that was answered by two Keystone goals from Tommy Horn and Noah Batis. Jake Coleman and Austin Romzek added third period goals to secure the win. Eagles goalie Chad Cadd made 30 saves.
