Son of NHL Hall of Famer Joins Cotton Kings

LUBBOCK, TX: October 2, 2006 - The Lubbock Cotton Kings of the Central Hockey League (CHL) are pleased to announce goaltender Josh Gartner, the son of NHL Hall of Famer Mike Gartner, has signed a contract with the Kings for the 2006/2007 season.

"I like what I hear about Josh and his ability to compete," said Cotton Kings Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Chris Dashney. "His statistics from the past couple of seasons are not indicative as to how well he performs stopping the puck."

Gartner comes to Lubbock after spending the past four seasons in college suiting up with Yale University. Last season, he appeared in seven games and posted 1-4-0 record with a 4.86 GAA and an 85.4% save percentage. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native was at Yale from 02/03 to 05/06, where he spent time as a teammate of Cotton Kings defenseman Stacey Bauman. Gartner had an immediate impact once arriving at Yale in 02/03, as he finished the season ranking tenth in the nation with a 91.7% save percentage. He was a two-time All-ECAC Academic Team member and a five-time ECAC Goaltender of the Week while with the Bulldogs. The 22 year-old's college career included a 23-31-0 record in 65 games with a 3.72 GAA and an 89.6% save percentage.

The 5'10" 175-pound goaltender spent a season of junior hockey prior to Yale in 01/02 primarily spent in the United States Hockey League (USHL) with the Green Bay Gamblers before joining the Hamilton Kilty B's of the Ontario Provincial Jr. A Hockey League (OPJHL) towards the close of the season and postseason. Josh's father, Mike, spent 19 seasons in the NHL and was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 2001 with a career that included 708 goals and 7 assists for 1335 in 1432 games. Mike appeared with five different NHL teams and was a seven-time NHL All-Star (1993 MVP).

The addition of Gartner gives the Kings 21 players announced for the 06/07 season. He joins goaltender Michael Clements, Brett Koscielny and Kyle Stanton, defensemen Chris Barth, Stacey Bauman, Jason Beatty, Marc Bianchi, Noel Henck, Craig Minard, Troy Neumeier and forwards Bobby Brown, Jimmy Callahan, Pat Doherty, Philippe Lacasse, Andrew Luciuk, Paul McBrien, Jaydyn Murray, Corey Rutt, Simon Watson, Trevor Weisgerber on the 06/07 roster. Gartner qualifies as a developmental player (128 games or less played). Each CHL team must have at least five developmental players on their roster.
