Saint John Riptide News Release
(Saint John, NB): The Saint John Mill Rats training camp roster has been finalized with some new editions and some familiar face as well.
"I'm excited to get going with this incredibly talented group of players," said Mill Rats Head Coach Rob Spon. "There will be some difficult decisions to make, but the players that we've put together gives us alot of skill, depth, and interchangeability. This will make our team very versatile and hard to defend, and we have alot of guys here looking to make their mark in this league this year."
Fans will be excited to see familiar faces added to the Port City roster: 6'4 shooting guard from Grandbay-Westfield Mike Anderson, 6'7 sharp shooting fan-favorite forward Steve Deluca, and 6'10 centre from Mali, Africa, Modibo Diarra.
Anderson averaged 3.0 points and 1.5 rebounds for the Mill Rats last season. Steve Deluca contributed 7.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game on 33.9% shooting from beyond the arc. He is the NBL Canada's Three-Point Champion from All Star Weekend in April. Modibo played in a reserve role last season while working himself back into shape, and helped the Mill Rats in a key playoff game last season when called upon.
The Mill Rats are also pleased to announce that 6'6 power forward Damian Gay, a teacher at Rothesay Netherwood School, and 6'5 wing Joshua Jones, who was selected from the Mill Rats minicamp last weekend in New Hampshire, will also be attending training camp.
Gay, who is from Guysborough, Nova Scotia, played college ball at Saint Mary's University and then Mount St. Vincent University in Halifax between 2004-2008. At Mount St. Vincent, he averaged 13.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game his senior season.
Jones is from Bangor, Maine and played at Husson College 2009-2011 where he averaged 19.2 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. He has experience in Germany and participated in the Maine Red Claws (NBA D-League) preseason in 2011.
These five players complete the roster for training camp, which begins on Media Day on Monday Oct 21 at Noon at UNB-Saint John. Media Day is open to fans and will consist of photos, medicals, and an open scrimmage beginning at around 2:30pm.
