Los Angeles Sol News Release
CARSON, CA - Monday, July 13, 2009 - The first-place Los Angeles Sol (Women's Professional Soccer) has signed defender Sharolta Nonen. She will replace Christie Shaner, who underwent surgery last Monday to repair a mid-shaft fracture in her tibia/fibula, the club announced today. Per club and WPS policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Nonen, 31, has recorded 58 national team caps with the Canadian National Team and played in the 1999 and 2003 World Cup. She also played in the WUSA with the Atlanta Beat from 2001-2004. Nonen spent her collegiate career at the University of Nebraska, where she was a three-time NSCAA All-American and was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and teammate of the Sol's Karina LeBlanc.
"On behalf of the entire Sol organization I'd like to wish Christie all the best and we hope for a full recovery," General Manager Charlie Naimo said. "With the season winding down and the playoffs around the corner, we still have to continue to improve. Sharolta brings a lot of experience and I am confident she will be able to jump right in and give the club an experienced presence."
Shaner was acquired by the Sol in a trade with Sky Blue FC on June 30 to replace Martina Franko, who is unable to finish the season. Shaner injured her right leg after colliding with Freedom's Abby Wambach in the Sol's 1-0 victory on July 5.
The Sol are enjoying a short break before travelling to play FC Gold Pride (Bay Area) Thursday, July 23 at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Sol finishes their regular season with two games on the road - playing the Red Stars in Chicago August 2, and then visiting the Breakers in Boston August 9.
