Sockers Weekly Report

San Diego Sockers News Release

Well, Now What?

The Sockers find themselves in the unexpected position of having dropped their season opener at home to the Cal Express, 7-6. The last time the Sockers had a losing record, they dropped their first two matches of the 2013-14 campaign, losing to Dallas and Monterrey at home. San Diego recovered that season to post a 13-3 record.

Slow Start for Stars

San Diego expects big production from their top three scorers, Kraig Chiles, Brandon Escoto and Leonardo de Oliveira. In their opening match, de Oliveira was unable for selection due to injury, while both Chiles and Escoto were shut out until the fourth quarter, when each managed a single goal.

Welcome, New Guys!

Two Sockers registered points in their club debuts on Sunday against the Cal Express. Defender Emmanuel Aguirre, a free agent signee out of RGV, netted his first Sockers goal in the third quarter, tying the score 4-4 on a feed from Cesar Cerda. Midfielder Slavisa Ubiparipovic, acquired in a trade from Utica City, registered an assist on Luis "Peewee" Ortega's second quarter goal.

Scoring Out of the Back

San Diego features offensive talent on the back line, which became apparent in the season opener against the Express. Defender Cesar Cerda was the only Socker to log a multi- point game with two assists, while defenders Luis "Peewee" Ortega and Emmanuel Aguirre both scored goals.

Home Heavy to Start

The Sockers will open with seven of their first nine matches at home, before a midseason road swing which will see 9 of 10 away from San Diego in the months of January and February. The Sockers close with home matches in four of their final five fixtures this season.

Around the Western Conference

The Monterrey Flash and Cal Express sit at the top of the table with 2-0 records after the opening weekend of MASL action. San Diego (0-1) and Sonora (0-2) occupy the bottom of the table, while Ontario, Mesquite, Dallas and Tacoma are yet to play.
