San Diego Sockers News Release

The San Diego Sockers announced the signing today of defender Dan Antoniuk to a professional contract for the 2014-15 MASL season. Terms of the deal were not announced as per club policy. Antoniuk joined the team for training last week and will be available for the season opener November 1st against the Las Vegas Legends.

"We're glad to have 'Big Dan' back," said Sockers general manager John Kentera, "Antoniuk was one of the top defenders in the PASL when he was with the Sockers before, and brings a big-time veteran presence back to us for the 2014-15 season."

Antoniuk, 33, is a well-traveled veteran of both the indoor and outdoor game professionally. The likable Philadelphia native first played for a previous iteration of the Sockers in 2003-04, but was a regular starter for the PASL championship teams of 2009-10 and 2010-11, scoring 25 goals in 29 games as an offensive defender. Antoniuk concentrated on his pro outdoor career in 2011-13 with Edmonton and Tampa Bay of the NASL, but returned for cameos with the Sockers each season. Last year Antoniuk played forward for the MISL St. Louis Ambush, scoring seven goals with seven assists in 17 games.

"I love palm trees, what can I tell you!" said Antoniuk on his return to the Sockers, "I'm really excited to be back here in San Diego. The guys here are great, I've always had a lot of fun playing here and it's one of the best clubs I've had the chance to play for. This feels like a second home to me."

The 33-year-old scored the equalizing goal late in the 2012 championship game for the Tampa Bay Rowdies, a game they would go on to win in a penalty shootout. Antoniuk has pro indoor experience with the Milwaukee Wave, Philadelphia KiXX, New Jersey Ironmen and Chicago Storm, and pro outdoor experience with Portland Timbers, Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina Railhawks, Montreal Impact and Charleston Battery in addition to Edmonton and Tampa.

The Sockers open their season against the Las Vegas Legends on November 1st at the Valley View Casino Center. Call Sockers tickets manager Christine Morey at (866) 799-GOAL to get your tickets today, or order online at sockers.com.
