KODAK, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Smokies (52-44, 15-12) defeated the Birmingham Barons (45-51, 14-13) 8-5 on getaway day Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium. The win gave the Smokies a series-split with the Barons and moved them back into first place in the Southern League North.

Birmingham led off the game with a solo home run against Ryan Jensen (W, 1-3), but the Smokies' right-hander settled in nicely after that. He set a season-high with five innings of two run ball and matched his season-best with five strikeouts. Jensen retired the final nine batters faced and 13 of the last 14 to earn his first win of the season.

After the Barons scored in the first, Jake Slaughter responded in a major way to put the Smokies on top for good. He launched his 13th homer, a three-run shot as Tennessee plated three in their half of the first. Bryce Ball drove in a pair of runs in the third, and two batters later, Bradlee Beesley capped a terrific week with a two-run homer, his ninth hit of the week.

The Smokies will begin a six-game road trip against the Rocket City Trash Pandas Tuesday night at Toyota Field in Madison, AL. First pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.

Smokies Stadium will host Paint the Park Pink Night in its next homestand beginning August 9 and will give away Brennan Davis bobbleheads on August 14. For tickets, call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
