Kodak, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (27-21) hit three home runs and powered past the Birmingham Barons (18-30) 5-4 Thursday night at Smokies Stadium in the third game of the series.
First baseman Matt Mervis was the first Smokie to go deep, as he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, his fourth since being called up. After Birmingham pulled ahead with a run off Tennessee starter Dalton Stambaugh in the fourth, Bradlee Beesley put the Smokies back in front with a two-run shot, his second in Double-A.
Birmingham scratched a run across in the top of the seventh, but the Smokies once again responded with a homer, this time off the bat of catcher Cam Balego against Sammy Peralta (L, 1-2). The go-ahead, two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh was Balego's first of the season, and it made a winner of Scott Kobos (W, 2-1). Reliever Nicholas Padilla threw two perfect frames to nail down his first save of the season.
