Knoxville Smokies News Release
Kodak, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (36-32) came short of a comeback, 8-6, Saturday night to the Chattanooga Lookouts (34-34), falling for the second consecutive night and leaving a series-split with Chattanooga a possibility to end the first half.
The Smokies trailed by as much as four runs entering the bottom of the seventh before designated hitter Matt Mervis brought the Smokies closer on his eleventh homer of the season -- a two-run shot to right. The next batter, second baseman Chase Strumpf, hit his team-leading 12th homer, but that was all the Smokies could get. Chattanooga added an insurance run in the ninth off Danis Correa, and Ricky Karcher (S, 6) locked down the bottom of the frame to close the game.
RHP Ryan Jensen dazzled over three innings as he continued to stretch out since returning from the Development List, allowing just one hit and striking out two. LHP Dalton Stambaugh (L, 4-2) took the loss in relief as he allowed four runs.
The Smokies can clinch a series win over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium in the final game of the first half of the season. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. ET when the Smokies send RHP Peyton Remy (4-2, 8.34) to the mound against LHP Connor Curlis (2-3, 5.04) in a rematch of the first game of the series. Fans can catch the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
Sunday's at Smokies Stadium are Family Funday. For tickets, call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
