Smith, Walters Are League's Weekly Best

DURHAM, NC - PA Sportsticker, the official statistician of the American Association, has selected Sioux Falls Canaries DH Will Smith and Fort Worth Cats RHP Cory Walters as Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of July 9th-July 15th.

In seven games, Smith hit .548 with one home run and nine runs driven in 31 at-bats. He also added a double, eight runs scored and had a .545 on-base percentage. In the July 9th game against the St. Joe Blacksnakes, Smith went 4-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run. For the season, the 25-year-old is hitting. 364 with nine home runs, 36 RBI and 91 hits in 58 games played. He is third in the Association in hits and slugging percentage (.560) and fourth in batting average.

Smith was drafted in the 6th round of the 2000 MLB draft by the Florida Marlins. He spent over three seasons in the Marlins organization before being traded over to the Texas Rangers in July of 2003. Last season with the Rangers' Triple A affiliate Oklahoma and the independent Winnipeg Goldeyes, Smith batted a combined .273 with seven home runs, 37 RBI and 18 doubles.

In two starts this past week, Walters went 1-0 allowing no runs on 12 hits with one walk and six strikeouts. This also included a complete game shutout against the Coastal Bend Aviators this past Wednesday. Currently, Walters is 6-4 with a 3.66 ERA in 71 1/3 innings pitched.

This is Walters fifth season of professional baseball. He has spent his career playing in the independent leagues playing for such clubs as Lincoln, St. Paul, Sioux Falls and Fort Worth.
